Carrying Water and Fuel During Runs

The only thing I like about running on the treadmill is that I don’t have to carry my water around, I just put it in the cup holder and when I am thirsty I just drink.  I really did not start  carrying water until I started running for more  6 miles at a time.  I usually just got through my run and drank at the end.  Which isn’t necessarily the smartest thing or the right thing .  Here is a good article about proper hydration  http://tinyurl.com/aopok5. I realize I should have been drinking more during my runs but I really hate carrying stuff in my hands, so I didn’t.  But before I went out for my first 10 mile run I bought a fuel belt, one with a big bottle.  It did not work very well for me, it felt bulky, the bottle leaked and it was not easy to put it back when I was done drinking.  So I used it once and now it sits in one of my kitchen cabinets never to be used again.   Then I  went out in search of one of the fuel belts with the little bottles.  I had seen other runner’s on the trail with them and thought that might work better.  Found one and it was much better. The bottles were easy to replace when I was done, it still felt a little bulky but it works well.  It also has a couple of little pockets to put keys and cell phone in.

I have started carrying water on shorter runs.  I found a nice bottle  that has a padded handle and a little pocket that fits my cell phone and keys in it, the company that makes it is Nathan.  The handle makes it much easier to hold, I can relax my hand without dropping the bottle.  I still don’t like holding a bottle while running, but I guess it is better than getting dehydrated.

  1. Interesting, I never carry anything unless I’m going out more than 6 or 7 (i know, not good!) but anythign over that and I always have my belt on. I have a double belt, larger bottles, but am considering a smaller belt with smaller bottles. I think it weighs me down lol (at least that’s what I keep telling myself!)
