    Book Recommendations

    Advanced Marathoning – 2nd Edition

    If you are serious about marathon training you should read through this book.  It has lots of great information about training, racing and recovering from a marathon.  It contains different schedules based on how many miles you want to run per week.

    Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, Superathletes, and the Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen

    On the surface this story about assorted elite runners and other characters who take part in an ultra marathon race in Copper Canyons with some of the best runners in the Taramuhara tribe.  It also gives us a basic understanding of the Taramuhara tribe, it’s athletic prowess and the challenges it faces in the 21st century.   It is a well written advocate of two basic theories about running: that man is born to run great distances  and that running and walking in modern shoes have led mankind to walk and run in unintended ways that have resulted in many more foot and leg injuries than previously. Christopher McDougall weaves these threads together into a very entertaining book.

    Great resource for runner’s.  Lots of good information. I found the strengthening exercises they recommended for different injuries very helpful.


    The Complete Book of Running for Women

    This book is amazing! I read this book from cover to cover. It is EXTREMELY helpful! There are chapters that cover everything from selecting running shoes, evaluating running surfaces, running while pregnant, running during menopause, etc.  I used the silver half marathon training program to train for the 3M half marathon.  The speed training sessions have really helped me increase my speed.

    Runner’s World Complete Book of Women’s Running: The Best Advice to Get Started, Stay Motivated, Lose Weight, RunInjury-Free, Be Safe, and Train for Any Distance (Runner’s World Complete Books)

    This book contains various training programs to take you from novice to marathon runner. It examines many issues relating to running, from body image to proper nutrition to running while pregnant. It was well-organized and motivational. It is a great investment for any runner or would-be runner.

    Marathoning for Mortals

    A  training guide for those doing a half-marathon run or walk, a walk/run and full marathon walk or run.  It really is good for a beginner. The advice given about overtraining, diet, and injury prevention is useful.  Good information for anyone considering doing a marathon.

    My Life on the Run: The Wit, Wisdom, and Insights of a Road Racing Icon

    I really enjoyed this book a lot.  His stories inspired me challenge myself more. His stories are also very funny. The story about his experience running in the nudist run made me LOL.

    Running Injury-Free: How to Prevent, Treat and Recover from Dozens of Painful Problems

    Covers  just about every running injury.  There are sections on strengthening, stretching, proper technique, cautions, encouragement.  I personally consider this a valuable resource, and recommend it to anyone who runs.

    What I Talk About When I Talk About Running

    Murakami’s memoir details his hard work, perseverance and dedication with regard to  long-distance running, and the positive affect it has had on his life and writing. Murakami’s lessons can applied in life no matter what your profession or passions may be.  As a runner  his dedication, hard work, focus, goal-setting and commitment to a quality life are inspiring. This a very enjoyable, fun read.

    50/50: Secrets I Learned Running 50 Marathons in 50 Days — and How You Too Can Achieve Super Endurance!

    Inspiring!  Makes my goal of running my first  marathon this year  seem very doable. I really enjoyed the book and the story. Dean is quite the character and I found his persistence to succeed pretty inspiring. The book is good for two reasons. It tells a good story about the event and it is full of great advice. I think it would be good for runners at all levels to read – and for those contemplating on weather or not they should start – I highly recommend it. You’ll be out running before you finish it!

    Ultramarathon Man: Confessions of an All-Night Runner

    Dean is amazing! He writes is a relaxed, conversational manner that makes you feel like he’s talking to you directly.  His experiences and the way he presents them makes the book an easy read.  Very inspirational and entertaining.

    The Elements of Effort: Reflections on the Art and Science of Running

    I love the format of this book.  It is a collection of short thoughts, inspiration, motivation, facts and tips on the subject of running.

    Making the Cut: The 30-Day Diet and Fitness Plan for the Strongest, Sexiest You

    Good resource for losing the last 10-20 pounds.  I found it useful and informative.  I did not follow  plan exactly, but used the information it contained to customize my own plan and it worked.
