Spin Shoes

Over the weekend I purchased some cycling shoes for spin class.  I put off buying them for a little while to make sure I was actually going to continue spinning, since they are not exactly cheap.  I ended up going to REI.  We have quite a few small bike shops here, but I did not want to get pressured by a sales person.  If I knew my size I probably would have just bought them online.  I ended up with a pair of of Louis Garnierau, they were $90 and the clips were $20. But considering that a friend from spin said she has had her shoes for 7 years, I figured  that it was worth the investment.

First problem I encountered at spin class was that all the bikes with clips had already been taken.  I was pretty bummed, because I really wanted to try my new shoes out.  One of my friends said I should get someone to switch, but if you know me that is just not something I would do.  So to my chagrin she asked someone and they switched with me.   After I got the bike and adjusted the setting I was ready to clip in.  Well I couldn’t quite figure out how to do that, so once again I needed help, which meant more attention drawn to me, grr.   But everyone was helpful and I got clipped in.  Of course after I got clipped in Ben (the spin instructor) tells me to unclip and clip back in a bunch of times so that I got the hang of it.  I did it once but had a hard time clipping back in so I figured that was enough practice.

About actually spinning with the shoes,  I liked it.  It  felt like I was using more muscles.  My quads finally felt like they were getting a workout and I felt like I my pedal stroke was stronger.  The instructor is always saying to make sure you are both pushing and pulling while pedaling and for the first time I felt like I actually was.  I’m glad I got the shoes and I think I will be getting a more efficient workout using them.

  1. Sounds like a good deal to me! I’ve always wanted to try a spin class!

  2. I think so to. Considering how much my running shoes cost and how often I have to replace them :)

  3. I love my spin shoes! Not that they are anything great, but like you said, I feel like I’m getting a better, more efficient workout! And yes, lots of people I know said they’ve had theirs for years!!! The expense is worth it!

  4. I’m about to buy some shoes also and hadn’t thought to look at REI. Will have to go there and check them out. I just got tendonitis pretty bad from having a long run, followed the next day by spin class in regular running shoes. Lesson learned–now I”m buying spin shoes AND better running shoes!
