Update: Foam Roller

Just a short follow up on my foam roller post.  I have been using it every day since I bought it, sometimes more than twice.   The first time I did the exercise for my ITB it really hurt on the side that was giving me trouble, it also took a couple of tries to get the move down.  Kind of awkward.   But after a few more uses the pain  decreased and I mastered the move, I am pain free other than right after a long workout and occasionally while using the foam roller.  I’ve noticed a significant change in the amount of stiffness and soreness in my legs, especially after long runs.  Last week was a great week to try this product  out because it was a very high mileage week for me, 44 miles.  I not only use the foam roller for my ITB, I also use it for my back, quads, hamstrings, and calves.  Once you figure out how to do all the moves, most of them are pretty enjoyable.  My least favorite are the ITB one and the back one, but they are also the most beneficial ones.  If you decide to purchase a foam roller here is a video you might find useful:  foam roller exercise video.  I run through all of these exercises at least once a day.  I did not use the DVD that came with the foam roller I bought, so I can’t say much about it, I found all the instruction I needed online. So all in all it is another great tool to help keep you injury and pain free, but don’t forget stretching, icing, strength training  and rest are all part of the equation as well.

  1. I use mine eeryday too! I got injured at the disney marathon in jan. with ITBS and went out and bought one. I do it even though the pain has, for the most part, subsided, but I want to maek sure it doesn’t come back! I also use it for my back. Would also highly recommend buying one for those who have any type of pain or just want to massage out the muscles after a good run.

  2. Love the foam roller! I have the exact same model and still use it on my hamstrings. I used it initially for ITBS and it really helped!

  3. I should have done more research before I bought my foam roller. Mine didn’t come with a DVD, boo hoo. I got one for piriformis issues. I am very bad about using it though although it does help. Thanks for video link, I will check that out.
